On November 9 and 10, 1938, about 460 attacks on Jewish fellow citizens took place in Düsseldorf. These nationwide planned actions went down in history as the November pogroms. Stores and private property were destroyed, houses of prayer were destroyed. Contemporary and eyewitnesses reported the invasion of the most intimate spaces, violent attacks and deaths. The events were a first sad climax of the systematic expulsion and extermination policy of the Nazi regime. It was to be followed by many more.

In ‘Schwarz-helle Nacht’, the theater ensemble Pièrre.Vers stages the voices of Jewish citizens of Düsseldorf on the events of the November pogrom of 1938 on the basis of contemporary witness accounts from the archives of the ‘Mahn- und Gedenkstätte’ (memorial site) and leads the audience through the city to original sites. At the sites of the events, the present meets the past. The perspectives of Jewish people today are also described. After the performance, the audience is invited to a discussion with the participating artists and historians.

The performative tour through the city makes the complexity of the events surrounding the night of November 9, 1938 in Düsseldorf visible, audible and tangible – in a very concrete, immediate and powerful way.
